Yes, the NEW Bayanihan website (among others) is having problems. It was down a couple of days ago the webhosting service along with myself got it back up on Thursday night and then boom it was down again on Friday morning. At the present it is still down.

I took it down last Sunday and the tools I have here in the room XYZ in Hotel Epsilon in Madison are insufficient to the task of rebuilding the website.

Why does it seem to me some people in the community think when they join a group they are getting married to the group and must forsake others?

One person (so the rumor goes) was castigating her fellow group-X members for joining our bus trip. This person went to the group-X's president and whined about so and so and the president of group-X said essentially: So?

So indeed. Now, I know relations have been frosty but I have talked with various members and various leaders and have found quite a few of them open and willing to co-exist. Unfortunately, those are not the ones who control the groups main resources (even though they are executive committee members) and as such their voice counts for a lot less than what it should.

When you attend a group-X event I wish you and all else a good time. I don't question you like a jealous spouse. Its about time for those members of group-X to accept our existence. All I care for is the success of our mission and events and the success or failure of group-X does not in any way affect our success.

Word is floating about how people on the bus were over-charged. The bus trip cost a person $20.00/seat for a trip to/from Chicago and $15.00 for children. That is not overcharging.

However, one place where the – charge – may stick is with respect to the stop at the UniMart Filipino grocery store. Yes, there were problems with double-charging, mischarging etc at the UniMart. However, the UniMart and NEW Bayanihan have no formal connections and as such we are free to take our business elsewhere on our next trip. That is what we intend to do (unless the UniMart does something big to make up for the mishaps)

As far as people getting kicked off of the bus, well, that is what happens when people do not pay for their seat. Surely it is reasonable to bar those who do not pay from participating?

The NEW Bayanihan snowball is finally gathering snow and growing!

Last night an executive committee meeting was held and not only was there participation and good feedback there was enthusiasm! Enthusiasm is catchy and our enthusiasm for this project has worn off onto others which in turn feedsback onto ourselves!

Yesterday we also met with a group working to raise funds for Rainbow Orphanage in Dumaguete City in the Philippines. We will work with and support this group in their goals and mission.

If you bop on over to the NEW Bayanihan website you may have seen a number of improvements and additions, what fuel we received yesterday. Farmers Market is well in hand. I do believe that will be a success, I pulled the application for the needed food permits and got the first one ready. The second one will follow!

Some of you may be steaming at the spam you got, seemingly from NEW Bayanihan. It wasn't sent by us the from and return-to e-mail addresses provided are SPOOFED!

I have discovered some similarities in the headers of the original message (I have had 40+ messages bounced and they all get forwarded to my e-mail account as I have my e-mail setup as the "catch-all" address. They are trying to return those messages to a non-existent NEW Bayanihan e-mail account) and they point to a well known source of spam.

The National Federation of Filipino American Associations has taken a stand on immigration. Its pretty standard and expected with the one exception being a call for better border control.

We have been approached to join NAFFAA and I am not certain if this is something I want to sign up with. Those who know me know I am very outspoken about my political beliefs and my philosophy of government. However, the NEW Bayanihan mission is apolitical in the sense that I do not want to use NEW Bayanihan to promote positions that require governmental lobbying. That is, I do not feel it is proper for NEW Bayanihan to take stand other than to say we obey and urge all others to obey our laws. I would feel wrong about having NEW Bayanihan take an explicit stand on immigration or any other political topic.

When I described my vision of NEW Bayanihan to a friend of a friend she immediately urged me to form a political arm, organized separately to lobby the government. Hehehe, I think she thought I was on her and my friends side (I am decidedly opposed to their political views but you know what they say about politics and religion) of the political debate. I resist even that, as potential volunteers and contributors may not realize the technical differences or the differences may not be great enough for them to overcome views perhaps contrary to theirs.

NEW Bayanihan is proud to announce its latest upcoming event. The NEW Bayanihan Spring Bus Trip to Chicago! NEW Bayanihan, is going to sponsor a bus trip to Chicago Illinois on Saturday May 13th.

The destination will be Chicago's Chinatown and the northside Uni-Mart. Cost is $20.00/seat and the bus will leave Appleton's Fox Valley Mall at 7:00am sharp on Saturday May 13 and will stop at the Miles Kimball Outlet in Oshkosh to pick up riders at 7:30am on Saturday May 13.

We plan to be back home at around 8:00pm.

Remember, at the Uni-Mart you can find those hard to find Philippino grocery items, we will arrange a pickup with Fiesta Cargo (Balikbayan boxes), and you can take care of other business such banking with the Philippine National Bank.

A Talk At St. Norbert's College

The Philippino Studies Program at St. Norbert's College in DePere Wisconsin presents Dr. Ciriaco "Dyun" Sayson Jr. from the University of Philippines - Diliman, who will be giving a public lecture on Thursday March 2, at 7:00pm. The location is Room 15 in Cofrin Hall.

The title of his lecture is: "Teaching Philosophy in the Philippines: Problems and Prospects.". Despite its narrow focus Dr. Sayson will when appropriate discuss larger issues affecting the Philippines.

The leaders of NEW Bayanihan had a little party and invited those we are working on to recruit into our fold of leadership. It was a good night and we were met with eager volunteers, lets hope they will step up from volunteer to leaders. I believe they will after they get to know us better and our intentions.

It is always good to mingle with friends to talk to people to try to draw out things about them. It is good.

Who Is NEW Bayanihan For?

Who?

Filipinos? No.

Americans? No.

Both? Yes, and others as well.

It is a mistake to characterize NEW Bayanihan as a Filipino organization more accurate would be Filipino-American organization. Remember, many of us are in mixed nationality marriages and to create an organization that caters only to one group or the other would be an affront to one of two parthners. Also, if you happen to be a pure Filipino couple, where do you live? You live in America, to be part of a group that focuses on one's birthland to the exclusion of the homeland (or vice versa) is not right. NEW Bayanihan stive's to be inclusive not exclusive.

In any event, NEW Bayanihan is established to serve others. NEW Bayanihan's aim is to serve the local communities we all live in and in the Philippines. Again, we strive to include both our homeland and our birthland (please note this is my birthland, I speak in general).

This is reflected in the events we have held or been part of. NEW Bayanihan has conducted events that stress the Philippino and events that stress the American. NEW Bayanihan has brought performing artists from the Philippines to share with our friends and neighbors here in Wisconsin. NEW Bayanihan has conducted baseball outings.

No other group has done so much to show to Northeastern Wisconsin the varied culture and great things of the Philippines. None. Have all the picinics you want but they do little more than get you fat.

Have you been to NEW Bayanihan's website lately? I mean REAL lately? You need to do it, as the website's index page (i.e. entrance page) has been given some pizzaz!

A couple of months ago I reorganized the page and that reorganization relied extremely heavily on tables to control the format. It worked but much was still missing. Now using a cascading style sheet (CSS) I have dumped the tables (for the most part) and added, colors, custom fonts, borders and the like. I also here using CSS helps to improve certain aspects of website promotion!

The next website project is to completely automate the rest of the index pages so updating is easier.

Lulu and the USPS have delivered the book I was blogging about last week. I am in the second chapter where Mark is detailing the facts about the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) phenomena. At first he discussed numbers, destinations, and jobs represented and now he is slowly getting into the effects of the phenomena.

My personal experience of living and working with OFWs shows his work meshes with my experience with the OFW community in the UAE.

It appears to be about 110 pages of reading. Even with careful reading I should be able to read this wihin a week (I read the second half of Shogun in two days).

There has been much going on in the Filipino-American community of late.

Namely we have the events centered down in Oshkosh. This is very sad and should serve as a warning to those wishing to try their hand at e-mail relationships. I know many in our community have succeeded in this and do not wish to cast a pall over your particular relationship, but think about it.

It is easy for anyone to pretend to be someone who they are not when the relation's main point of contact is e-mail. Even the period of time you are supposed to be meet is no where near long enough to get a good feel for the person on the other side of the ocean.

Please do not get me wrong this advice applies to those on both sides of the ocean. Not everyone here is a good person, they could be abusive or bad in some other way. There is probably a reason they resort to e-mail relationships. For those on this side of the ocean realize some of the people are desparate and will do or say anything to escape their situation and they only have eyes on your bank account.

In the years I have been in this community I have seen these relationships both flourish and fail. I have seen abusive and rotten Americans and I have seen gold-diggers from the Filipines. I have also seen some glorious relationships that are testaments to love. I am not saying to not proceed but proceed with extreme caution.

If you are an American reading this, beware there are those from the Filipines looking for nothing but $. If you are from the Filipines and are reading this beware there are some Americans looking for someone to do the cooking, dishes, sex, and little else.

On a second note the tsmiss level in this community is spiking to a level I have not seen in some years. We got a call from irate "friend" tonight wanting to cuss me out to my wife. She left a message and told me not to interfere. Interfere with what?

Has been on other things. So the NEW Bayanihan website is just being monitored. Am getting quite a bit of traffic on the site in the past week. However, I think the majority of those visits are bots and not legit visits as I am getting a few more spam notes from that e-mail.

I have thought about changing the form program. Currently I have to put the target e-mail in the form's html and as a result 'bots can harvest the address and add it to spam databases. I am thinking about using a key in the form, and the form handler program would use that key to do a table lookup of the e-mail address. Want to do this in PHP so I have to find a formmail program that is written in PHP rather than in PERL. Do you know of one? Let me know please.

Also I am talking to people about LUMPY. Do you have a great turon, lumpia, or barbecue recipe? Let me know and we can make it famous!

Slowly but surely NEW Bayanihan's website is moving to a real professional web system! The main page is even more automated! It is hard to tell from a user's perspective but believe me it is, it contains even less hardcoded material and more database retrieval.

Quicklinks (the links on the left side) are now automated and so too are the headlines.

One of the projects NEW Bayanihan is working on is the UST-Singers in 2006. One of my brainstorms is to create promotional CDs to distribute with promotional packets. Each CD would be themed and would contain no more than three songs. Well the CDs are copyrighted material and as such we need to secure permission and terms to do this.

I have been e-mailing the choir's official addresses and the director about this and am getting no response and the contacts we have with the choir have not had much more luck than I have had. Oh well keep on trying right!

I spent some tonight working on programming the main NEW Bayanihan page. What I want to do is to automate the loading of the headlines. So when a headline is no longer appropriate it is rolled off. I would keep the information on the site, just it would move off to an archive page, so the headlines are fresh.

Tomorrow I am going to program the links on the left side as well. Pretty soon the index page will be all program and not a bit of static left in it.
This will make maintaining the pages easier.

Be looking for those changes probably within a week, but if I do it correctly no one should notice the difference.

Record Traffic!

On Sunday NEW Bayanihan's website set a record for traffic at 39 sessions!

This is NOT hits. Hits are an unreliable measure of traffic as Joe Webmaster can sit on his site and start hitting the refresh button time after time, or even write a program to do this. No, that 39 represents 39 different users, they came from a wide variety of references such as Boots and Sabers, Blogger Beer, search engines, etc etc etc!

Claudia, my brother, father, aunt, and myself are going to be out for one week. We will be going to Colorado to visit my cousin and we will ski two days at Monarch Pass. Hope to be able to post pix and blogs but am making no promises.

Also I hope I can find some time to create a PEN committee page or at least post some more pix. I have no idea what kind of connectivity I will have. Our cells are with us and we are on a nationwide calling plan so if you need to call just call! If I am on the slopes just leave a message!

I am going to try to post more regularly to this site. At first I was using primarily to boost our flagship site's search engine ratings, but it appears Google pays little heed to the blog sites. Not a bad thought.

Anyway Claudia and I are headed to a PEN wrap up meeting tonight. Will sit down with the rest of the PEN committee and get and give feedback about the event. Go over the positives and the negatives so on and so forth. Will be mentioning NEW Bayanihan and Project Lumpy. I am hoping aside from SHARP we can get another three people to become actively involved with NEW Bayanihan.

Announcing Project Lumpy!

Project LUMPY is going to commence this summer and its main focus is for fundraising both for the foundation and to generate operational funds for NEW Bayanihan.

Project LUMPY will create a very visible Filipino presence in the Fox Valley and will be "masarap"!

We need help for Project Lumpy, I would like to set up four teams of four-five people each. Each team would take one weekend a month to conduct project Lumpy and then at the end of the year be available for the finale of Project Lumpy (all teams would work that day). We need one cook/team, one leader/team and two-three volunteers who would assist with cooking, working with customers, and making sure the booth is clean and complies with all applicable rules and regulations.

Had a Board meeting last night.

It went well everyone stayed focused on the agenda and all left the meeting with things to do! The PEN project was discussed quite a bit, the question was asked what benefit did NEW Bayanihan recieve for helping out.

About NEW Bayanihan was a significant part of the program and recieved good visibility by people who have not been a part of NEW Bayanihan in the past.

There were press notices of the event which mention NEW Bayanihan. For example see this notice in the Post Crescent.

Wow,

long time no post. However I just wanted to note NEW Bayanihan was part of a fundraising event that went real well. We managed to raise around $6,000 for a cancer victim. The CA is in remission and the woman in question has insurance but there are still many expenses that insurance does not cover and long term disability is unable to fund.

We have identified some more people who are excited about NEW Bayanihan its purpose and I am hoping we can get them on board to sign on the line and become part of the board of directors.

The hits continue to roll in. Since the last post the number of hits appears to have been maintaining a high level. The visitors are hitting all of our pages up and to be looking at them. If the rate continues we will be getting 100/week! Since I have been able to monitor this number closely we have recieved over 200 hits and we have been on the new system now for less than one month!

St. Bernards Parish in Appleton just rennovated its website. The look and feel are similar but they moved the hosting to a real web hosting service and purchased their own domain. FYI that domain is: http://www.stbernardappleton.org St. Bernards Parish in Appleton Wisconsin. I helped guide their webmaster through the process of getting their website onto a real hosting service.

Our website http://www.newbayanihan.org an organization for Filipinos and Americans in Northeast Wisconsin received an unussually large number of hits yesterday. Nothing like Google, Amazon or E-Bay (they probably recieved hundreds x the hits per minute we get in a month) but noteworthy none the less.

Looking at the stats I see no obvious patterns that can point to a cause. Don't get me wrong this is great.
